At the National Obesity Surgery Centre, we are justly proud to have been the
very first balloon centre in the UK to have fitted a balloon in a young adult.
We are aware of the potentially controversial nature of this treatment, and
undertook the procedure only after much consultation and assessment by several
NHS Consultants; including paediatricians; gastroenterologists and anaesthetists.
We believe our programme has much to offer appropriate young obese people,
but at this stage must only be undertaken after other treatment options have
failed.
Obesity is a major cause of both significant disability and reduced life expectancy.
To avoid our young folk needlessly dying before their parents, we must act now.
Each patient will be assessed on his or her own merits to determine their
suitability.
We are happy to accept referrals directly from concerned parents or via other
medical practitioners. We are also happy to liaise with specialists working in
any obesity-related specialty who might wish to provide this service as part
of their own on-going weight management programme.
